FDNY road rage killer arrested in New Jersey

BROOKLYN, New York – According to NYPD officials, 29-year-old Joseph Desmond was arrested in coordination with the US Marshals, NYPD & NJ Police departments. The manhunt began early Sunday on charges of homicide. He was located and arrested at Circle Inn Motel in South Amboy early Tuesday morning. Desmond was taken into custody with his girlfriend. He will be brought back to Brooklyn to be charged at the 62nd Precinct later today. His girlfriend will not be charged in relation to the road rage killing of FDNY Firefighter Faizal Coto.

On Sunday, December 9 just before 4:30 a.m., NYPD officers responded to an accident on the eastbound side of the Belt Parkway (in the vicinity of Bay 8th Street & Bay Parkway). When officers arrived on the scene, off duty FDNY firefighter Coto was found with severe head trauma and lying next to his 2008 Ford Mustang on the shoulder of the parkway. The beloved firefighter, who was only three years in, was pronounced dead at HHC Coney Island Hospital. According to the police, Coto was struck by Joseph Desmond with a baseball bat after the lane change collision when Coto got out of his vehicle. For two days a massive interdepartmental man-hunt was called for a silver-gray 2006 Infiniti G35, New York plate number JEA 2402, with drivers’ side damage.

FF Coto’s buddies remember him as someone who “always had their back.” An Instagram post from @Joeromeoofficial states, “I Lost My Best Friend Today.” Coto was an active-duty firefighter at Coney Island’s Engine 245 who was best friends with FDNY firefighter and nurse Joe Romeo. Romeo and Coto became friends when they were both probies at Engine 245 three years ago. They both share the love of music and brotherhood. Coto will be laid to rest on Thursday with full departmental honors.
